Upper Mustang Trek – 16 Days

12 Days

Panchase danda lies almost 28 km west of Pokhara.

Overview

Although this beautiful hill is near to the city area, it offers a great view of the Annapurna Mountain Range, with other mountains as well like Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchre, and Ganesh Himal. This trek will take you to a maximum height of 2500 m above sea level, which may not sound as exciting as the other treks. But the trail across the forest, with a wild variety of wildlife, birds, and flowers, and the chance to immerse yourself in the culture of local ethnicities is a great experience that almost compares to that of other longer treks.

Although the whole trip may take you about 9 days to complete, the walking days are only 4 to 5, which makes it a great option if you are new to trekking, or if this is your first ever trek. This trek can also be a great practice trek if you are planning for more difficult and challenging treks in the near future. And finally, this trek will be suitable for you if you are on a tight schedule but want to have a good trekking experience of diving into nature and the local culture of Nepal, that rewards you with a magnificent view in the end.

This trek is not as popular as the other Annapurna Circuit treks, so you can expect a quiet and peaceful journey and truly enjoy the experience.

It is advised to avoid this trek during the rainy season as it is near Pokhara, which falls in the area of Nepal that receives the most rainfall every year. That means slippery trails filled with leeches and views blocked with clouds almost every day. However, during the other seasons, this is a perfectly good trail. The ideal time to do this trek would be around Mid-September to May.

At Trek Nepal Trips, we are committed to making your trek the best experience you will ever have. Please note that these trips are completely customizable according to your preference. The itinerary is only for reference.

Itinerary

As soon as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, our staff will pick you up and bring you to our hotel in Thamel. If your day/evening is free, you can stroll around the streets of Thamel, or go to one of the many bars/pubs or restaurants for drinks or dinner. If you are interested, you can also visit religious temples inside Kathmandu, specifically Pashupatinath where there is a group worshiping or “Aarti” program every evening around 6.

On your second day in Nepal, after a good filling breakfast at the hotel, we will take you sightseeing inside the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu is a city of temples, you will find one at every corner. But the most popular one is Pashupatinath which is a great pilgrimage site for Hindus all over the world. Boudhanath and Swayambhunath are two very famous stupas here. You can also visit the marketplaces around Thamel and end your day at any one of the trendy bars/restaurants/clubs available around the Durbarmarg or the Thamel area. You can also shop for trekking equipment and gears around these areas.

If you are interested, on this day we can also schedule an early morning 1-hour mountain flight to the scenic mountains, including Mount Everest. Do let us know if you want to add the mountain flight package to this trip.

Approx. 30-minute flight + 3-4 hrs walk
On day 3, we will take an early flight to Pokhara. We will reach Pokhara quickly, as the flight is only around 30 minutes, and you will see a beautiful view of the mountains all through the flight. When you reach Pokhara, you are greeted with a view of the Ganesh and Manaslu peaks. Pokhara is a small valley surrounded by mountains and hills and filled with lakes like Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas.

You can relax for a bit before taking a boat across Phewa Tal and walking up to Peace Pagoda. This is a beautiful stupa–a popular tourist destination located just above Phewa Tal. From here you hike again and reach Bhumdi in about 3 hours.

4-5 hrs
The next day, we get some breakfast at the Bhumdi village and start hiking up to Bhanjyang. This day is a great day for new trekkers and nature lovers because, with an easy hike, you get to see a great view. The trail consists of a dense forest all with rhododendron blooming around you, and also it is one of the best destinations for bird watching. You will see the mountains peeking through the trees, and catch a better view once the forest thins out. We stay overnight in a hotel at Bhanjyang.

Around 1 hr + 3 hrs
On this day, we start our hike very early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the majestic mountains. The hike to the top takes about 45 minutes but make sure to start an hour early than the forecasted sunrise time that day as missing it would suck! The orange glisten of the first rays of the sun on the snow-capped mountain tops is just amazing and you can sit there and enjoy the view for a while. Then you can come down to Bhanjyang, have some breakfast, and start descending to Bhadaure village.

Around 6 hrs
After an overnight stay at Bhadaure, we will get a good breakfast and start moving towards Dhampus. It is a really beautiful village and a popular tourist destination as well because it falls on some of the Annapurna Circuit trekking routes. To really know about the village culture of Nepal, you can walk around Dhampus after your trek and talk to the villagers (often of Gurung ethnicity), even share a meal with them. There are also multiple home-stay options available here if you want to get the full village experience.

4-5 hrs
We will trek to Sarangkot on this day. Sarangkot is a popular viewpoint for internal as well as international tourists as you get a stunning view of the city below, the mountains above, and a spectacular sunrise in the early morning, so it might be a little more crowded than other destinations on our way. This is also a popular destination for paragliding or parasailing. We can stay at a hotel in Sarangkot itself or get a bus down to Pokhara.

You can choose to stay in the beautiful valley of Pokhara for a couple of days to relax after the trek, or you can take a bus or catch a flight from here to Kathmandu. Pokhara has really fancy Spas and resorts if you want to chill. But if you are still hungry for adventure, you can utilize one or two days to explore the many adventure options available, ranging from paragliding, and rafting to bungee jumping, canoeing, and more. If not, you can just hang out boating at the lakeside with a couple of beers and catch a micro-bus to Kathmandu around mid-day. You can also book a flight which is about 25 minutes.
