Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek

12 Days

Since its official opening for trekking in 2012, the Mardi Himal trek has been considered one of the best trekking experiences in Nepal.

Overview

This is a relatively less challenging trek on the Annapurna circuit, although it is classified as being moderate to demanding. It is a great option for trekkers not quite confident enough about the ABC trek, but it is just as beautiful and mesmerizing.

Because this trek is less popular than the ABC trek, this experience is suitable for folks that want a more peaceful and quiet walk in the remote wilderness. You will get to walk blissfully amidst a huge ecosystem of flora and fauna, enjoy the majestic view of the Annapurna Range, and blooming Rhododendron forests, and immerse yourself in the Himalayan culture of traditional Nepali villages with accommodation in local homestays.

The highest point you will get in this trip is the Mardi Himal Base Camp located at 4500 meters above sea level. You will get to be among the tallest mountains in the world including Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Ganesh Himal, Mt.Machhapuchhre, Mt.Manaslu, Mardi Himal, and Annapurna south. Mt. Himchuli, Mt.Singhachuli, Mt. Fang, Tent peak, etc.

Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek trip will begin with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The trek will begin on day 2 when you will start walking from Dhampus Phedi to Deurali. Then you will trek through dense forests and amazing landscapes towards Forest camp, Low camp, High camp, and finally to the viewpoint. From there you will descend towards Sidhing Village, Lumre, and drive back to Pokhara.

It is best to do this trek with an experienced guide (if it is your first time on the trek) as it is not well marked and the trail is even a little risky in certain places. Especially after forest camp, the trail is rough, rocky, and gravel-strewn. This trek also might be a bit challenging for first-time trekkers but you will be fine as long as you are a physically active person.

At Trek Nepal Trips, we are committed to making your trek the best experience you will ever have. Itinerary

As soon as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, our staff will pick you up and bring you to our hotel in Thamel. If your day/evening is free, you can stroll around the streets of Thamel, or go to one of the many bars/pubs or restaurants for drinks or dinner. If you are interested, you can also visit religious temples inside Kathmandu, specifically Pashupatinath where there is a group worshiping or “Aarti” program every evening around 6.

On your second day in Nepal, after a good filling breakfast at the hotel, we will take you sightseeing inside the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu is a city of temples, you will find one at every corner. But the most popular one is Pashupatinath which is a great pilgrimage site for Hindus all over the world. Boudhanath and Swayambhunath are two very famous stupas here. You can also visit the marketplaces around Thamel and end your day at any one of the trendy bars/restaurants/clubs available around the Durbarmarg or the Thamel area. You can also shop for trekking equipment and gears around these areas.

If you are interested, on this day we can also schedule an early morning 1-hour mountain flight to the scenic mountains, including Mount Everest. Do let us know if you want to add the mountain flight package to this trip.

We drive along with the astounding view of the Trisuli and Marsyangdi River, it's a scenic four-hour drive. The rivers are well suited for adventure sports such as rafting and canoeing. When you reach Pokhara, you are greeted with a view of the Ganesh and Manaslu peaks. Pokhara is a small valley surrounded by mountains and hills and filled with lakes like Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas. You can chill by the lakeside in the evening or enjoy one of the many trendy bars or cafes.

40 min drive + 5hrs walk
On day 4 after breakfast, we take a bus to Phedi. Our trek officially begins when we start walking from Phedi to Deurali. “Phedi” in Nepali translates to “Bottom”, and this village can be considered the “bottom” of our trek too. It is a popular arrival/departure point for many trekkers on various routes.

Deurali is a small village with a scarce population. Many decades ago it was just a place where locals brought their sheep to graze and took shelter in caves. But because it falls in the way of popular trekking routes, it is now a popular stop for trekkers with many tea-houses and lodges. You can visit the Hinku Cave, which locals used as a shelter against avalanches and rain, or relish in the view of many waterfalls along the way.

6 hrs
Early next morning, we have enough breakfast and head towards Forest Camp. make sure to eat enough food, and carry some for the road as well because you will find no tea houses for the next 6 hours. Also, make sure to carry enough water with you. This trail consists of about an hour of the easy route, but after that, you will pass thick forests and steep roads which can be a bit challenging. But the forest is filled with blooming Rhododendron flowers and astounding views of nature which distracts from a tedious trail. Finally, after reaching the forest camp, you can have a good dinner and take some rest to prepare for another day of walking. Or, you can explore the forest area, which is also called Kokar.

6-7 hours
From the Forest Camp, you will trek towards Low camp, which is a relatively easy walk compared to the previous day. The forest gets thinner and it feels like the sky is getting more visible above you. After lunch here, you can climb further for about an hour to reach Badal Danda (Cloud Hill), which gives you the most amazing and heavenly view of the valley below with clouds below you and a stunning panoramic view of the mountains. Many people choose to end their trek here as well. We will go back to the low camp to spend the night.

3-4 hours
This is a short day of walking but can get exhausting fast due to the altitude. On this trail, you will find the most beautiful landscapes and a clear view of mountains along the way including Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal. The high camp itself is amazing as it sits right below the mountains, and above the clouds. The mountains feel very close like you can reach your hands out and almost touch them!

3-4 hours
On day 8, we will rise early in the morning and start climbing once again. After almost 4 hours of walking on a narrow and challenging path, we will reach the Mardi Himal Base Camp. The difficult climb will be rewarded with a stunning view of mountains which is the best view of the trek. This is the highest altitude you will reach and also the key destination, so you can sit back and enjoy, with satisfaction in your heart that you made it to the top! After a while, we will go back to the High Camp, which takes much less time than climbing up.

6-7 hours
The next day after a hearty breakfast, we will move downwards towards Sidhing village. The trail is steep as you will drop almost 2000m in height, but the descent is fun and relaxing because of the forest and river along the way.

3 hrs walk + 3 hours on the bus
Although you can rent a vehicle to take you to Pokhara straight from Sidhing, it can get quite expensive. Most trekkers choose to hike to Lumre, which is a beautiful village and hail a bus from there which is much cheaper. It's only a 3-4 hour walk and the trail is quite easy. From Lumre, you can reach Pokhara in about 3 hours by bus.

6 hrs
You can choose to stay in the beautiful valley of Pokhara for a couple of days to relax after the trek, or you can take a bus or catch a flight from here to Kathmandu. Pokhara has really fancy Spas and resorts if you want to chill. But if you are still hungry for adventure, you can utilize one or two days to explore the many adventure options available, ranging from paragliding, and rafting to bungee jumping, canoeing, and more. If not, you can just hang out boating on the lakeside with a couple of beers and catch a micro-bus to Kathmandu around mid-day. You can also book a flight which is about 25 minutes.

Finally, on the last day of your trip, we will drive you from our hotel in Kathmandu to Tribhuvan International Airport for departure.
