Khopra Danda Trek

11 Days

Khopra Danda is a beautiful and less popular trek and is a good alternative to the popular treks.

Overview

The trail is more challenging than Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp but less challenging than Upper Mustang or Langtang Valley Trek. The trek starts from Sundarijal (1,100m/3,609ft) just north of Kathmandu city and crosses through several dense forests before reaching the Khopra Danda ridge at 3,640m/11,941ft. From there you follow a high pass through mountain ranges until you reach Galeshwor village on the banks of Budhi Gandaki river in the Manang district. This trail offers incredible views of Himalayan peaks like Mt Annapurna (8,091 m/26,545 ft), Mt Dhaulagiri (8167 m/26758 ft), and Mt Machhapuchhre (6993 m/22339 ft), and many others along with interesting cultural encounters with local people as well as ancient Buddhist monasteries.

If you’re looking for a more authentic trekking experience, the Khopra Danda Trek offers some of the best ways to get off the beaten path. The route is less developed than those along the Annapurna circuit, so you’ll have more opportunities to interact with local villagers and see things that aren’t typically on other trails. The campsites are also less crowded and easier to find. Khopra Danda is an excellent option for those who want to explore the off-the-beaten-path of Nepal with an intimate experience of its rich culture while enjoying the stunning Himalayan landscape. You’ll have more opportunities to interact with local villagers.

The trail passes through many Gurung villages. The Gurung people are a friendly group of people who live in the mountains and have a rich culture. They are known for their beautiful crafts, especially wood carving and weaving.

The Rhododendrons flower in spring, so it is a good time to see them. Rhododendrons are also called “rosy pinks,” and their flowers are about as big as your hand. They are spectacular in the springtime when they bloom pink flowers along the path.

This trek is a great chance to discover a part of Nepal that few people know about while getting closer to nature at the same time!

Itinerary

Day 1 :
Arrival

Our staff will be at the airport to pick you up as soon as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. You will be brought to our hotel in Thamel. You can even enjoy the streets of Thamel and Basantapur if you have leisure time. We recommend you to attend “Arati” in Pashupatinath temple as it is a worshiping event and it's truly magical.

20 minutes flight
You can catch an early morning flight to Pokhara and enjoy the beauty of Pokhara. Pokhara has a lot to offer if you can give your time. We recommend a boat ride in Fewa lake and a relaxing afternoon lunch at Pame. You can experience the laid-back environment of Pokhara if you roam around the lakeside in the evening.

2070 meters, 7 hours
From Pokhara, it’s a 2-hour drive to Nayapool from where we will start our trek. Your permits will be checked at Bhirethanti. A 2-3 hours trek along the bank of a small river will bring you to Tikhedhunga. From here, a 2-3 hours climb will take you to Ulleri, our first overnight stay destination.

2875 meters, 6-7 hours
The ascent from the Ulleri stairs will bring you to Banthanti. From here the trail will take you through the beautiful forest and we will reach Nangethanti after a short climb. Here, we will have our lunch and enjoy the tranquility of the forest.
After lunch and a short rest, we will walk 1-1.5 hours to reach Ghorepani. If the weather favors you, you can enjoy the views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Nilgiri, and Annapurna South among others.

3350 meters, 7-8 hours
You can enjoy the sunrise and Golden hour from Poon hill early in the morning. Poon hill is a short trek from Ghorepani. You will return back to Ghorepani and have your breakfast.
The trek of this day is fabulous, as you will walk through the ridge of the hill until you reach Deurali. Here you can taste the local cheese.
The trail to Dobato will now take you through the forest and lead you to a breathtaking landscape.

3660 meters, 7-8 hours
If you wake up early in the morning you can catch a breathtaking view of the mountains and hills from Mulde View Point. The view that feeds your eyes is more pleasing than that of Poon hill. After having breakfast you can continue your trek through the forest and several green pastures. After a few hours, you will arrive at Shrsitibang where you will have your lunch. After lunch, you will trek to Khopra Danda. This trek from Shrsitibang will most likely take about 3 hours.

4500 meters, 10 hours
We start at the earliest we can this day as it’s a long trek. We trek through the mountains to get an excellent view of Fang mountain. After a good trek, you will reach the sacred site of Khayer lake. Hindus believe that a bath in the lake will help attain Nirvana. However, you can see both Hindu and Buddhist shrines around the lakeside.

2200 meters, 5-6 hours
Today you will descend through the dense Rhododendron forest. This calming trek will take about 5 hours and you will reach your destination Swanta.

1190 meters, 5 hours
Your destination brings you a natural hot spring where you can relax your tired body and re-energize yourself for the days ahead.

After a relaxing day at Tatopani, you can take a jeep or a bus to Pokhara. You continue your Pokhara tour in the evening and get ready to fly back to Kathmandu.

If you have a tight schedule you can take an early flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu and catch your international flight right away if it is on the same day.
