Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek -10 Days

10 Days

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a gratifying journey amidst one of the most amazing eco-trails in the world.

Overview

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a gratifying journey amidst one of the most amazing eco-trails in the world. In this trek, you can enjoy a scenic view of the Annapurna Region and get to experience an ancient culture, traditional villages, tempting valleys, and rhododendron, oak, pine, and juniper forests all along the way.

This trek is not very strenuous as there are about 5 days of actual walking (7-8 hours max per day) and the altitude is also not very high which lowers the risk of altitude sickness. The maximum height you will reach is Poon Hill which is at an elevation of 3,210 m above sea level. Therefore, if you are looking for a mild difficulty trek, if you are not really physically active or are a first-time trekker, looking to trek on a budget, this is the perfect trek for you. This can also be an acclimatization trek if you are planning to do a more strenuous trek later in your journey.

Despite being a short and comparatively easier trek on the Annapurna Circuit, this trek will take you to the very heart of the Annapurna Region. Poon Hill is a hill station and a very famous mountain viewpoint from where you can see the Annapurna region including Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna II, III, and IV, Dhaulagiri, Lamjung Himal, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhare, and Manaslu. On the day to climb Poonhill, trekkers generally wake up and get an early start to reach the top before sunrise. Watching the first rays of sun strike on the snow-capped peaks and the view of the glistening gold mountains is truly a heavenly experience and cannot be found elsewhere.

May is the best month for this trek, followed by September to November (Autumn) as during these months the visibility of the sky and stability of the weather make the view magnificent. Monsoon (June to July) is not a good time to go to Ghorepani Trek because of heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and unclear views. Similarly, in winter (December to February), the extreme cold takes away the thrill of trekking, although the scenery is very beautiful which can make it appealing.

At Trek Nepal Trips, we are committed to making your trek the best experience you will ever have. Itinerary

As soon as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, our staff will pick you up and bring you to our hotel in Thamel. If your day/evening is free, you can stroll around the streets of Thamel, or go to one of the many bars/pubs or restaurants for drinks or dinner. If you are interested, you can also visit religious temples inside Kathmandu, specifically Pashupatinath where there is a group worshiping or “Aarti” program every evening around 6.

On your second day in Nepal, after a good filling breakfast at the hotel, we will take you sightseeing inside the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu is a city of temples, you will find one at every corner. But the most popular one is Pashupatinath which is a great pilgrimage site for Hindus all over the world. Boudhanath and Swayambhunath are two very famous stupas here. You can also visit the marketplaces around Thamel and end your day at any one of the trendy bars/restaurants/clubs available around the Durbarmarg or the Thamel area. You can also shop for trekking equipment and gears around these areas.

If you are interested, on this day we can also schedule an early morning 1-hour mountain flight to the scenic mountains, including Mount Everest. Do let us know if you want to add the mountain flight package to this trip.

We drive along with the astounding view of the Trisuli and Marsyangdi River, it's a scenic four-hour drive. The rivers are well suited for adventure sports such as rafting and canoeing. When you reach Pokhara, you are greeted with a view of the Ganesh and Manaslu peaks. Pokhara is a small valley surrounded by mountains and hills and filled with lakes like Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas. You can chill by the lakeside in the evening or enjoy one of the many trendy bars or cafes.

9.2 kilometers, 4-5 hours
The next day after having breakfast in Pokhara, we will drive to Nayapul from where the trekking will formally start. On this day we will start walking towards Tikhedhunga(1480m) through Birethanti (1,065 m). The trail comprises several village settlements and beautiful tea houses along the way. As soon as you start walking, you will be greeted with a view of the Machhapuchre Himal

6 to 7 hours
After breakfast on day 5, you start the trek by crossing a long suspension bridge. Just after 15 minutes of walking, you will be welcomed by the infamous 3767 stairs. These stairs are all uphill and steep, and this is the hardest part of the trek. However, this is compensated with a stunning view of the Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli, beautiful mountain settlements, and small tea houses where you can fill up on local delicacies like “dhido” which is high in nutritional value. You will also pass through beautiful rhododendron forests. Gre ready to be accompanied by horses and school kids along the way!

On this day you will need to wake up really early as you will have to reach Poon hill and catch the sunrise. The sunrise from here is truly majestic, described by many as a spiritual experience. You will catch a phenomenal view of golden sunlight over Mt.Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,855 m), Varaha Shikhar (7,847 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Machhapuchhare (6,993 m), Nilgiri (6,940 m), Lamjung Himal (6,931 m), Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) and others.

After that, you will return back to Ghorepani for breakfast and head to Tadapani. Tadapani is in itself a beautiful little village sitting right in the lap of mountains and the perfect spot for a night stay on this route.

Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk is quite an easy descent with trails passing through Rhododendron and Oak forests and birds singing pleasantly in the background. Ghandruk is one of the popular tourist villages of Nepal as it boasts a panoramic view of mountains all around while having a rich traditional culture. It is mostly filled with Gurung ethnicities and filled with activities that you can explore. There is also a dedicated Gurung museum that you can visit if you have the time, or walk around the handicraft center.

4-hour walk + Around 2-hour drive
This is the last day of walking on this trip and an easy one, although it is not the best walk of the trip. You have to walk from Ghandruk to Birethanti, and Birethanti to Nayapul. From Nayapul, you can catch a bus to Pokhara and reach the city within an hour or two.

You can choose to stay in the beautiful valley of Pokhara for a couple of days to relax after the trek, or you can take a bus or catch a flight from here to Kathmandu. Pokhara has really fancy Spas and resorts if you want to chill. But if you are still hungry for adventure, you can utilize one or two days to explore the many adventure options available, ranging from paragliding, and rafting to bungee jumping, canoeing, and more. If not, you can just hang out boating at the lakeside with a couple of beers and catch a micro-bus to Kathmandu around mid-day. You can also book a flight which is about 25 minutes.
